Original Size Detection
a. Overview
The machine detects a size of original on the
copyboard glass based on the combination (presence/absence) of output level
changes from the reflective sensors located under the copyboard
glass.
●Without original: The reflected light from the reflective
sensor changes when the platen cover (or ADF) is
opened and also it is closed.
●With original: The reflected light from the reflective
sensor does not change when the platen cover
(or ADF) is opened and also it is
closed.
The machine differs in terms of
the original size it supports (inch, AB metric) depending on where it is
shipped. It, therefore, comes with a specific type of reader unit to accommodate
the different needs of different countries.

It is not possible to tell
apart reader units designed for inch and A metric configurations (i.e., 11x17
and A3; LTR and A) because of sensor arrangement. To avoid confusion, each
reader unit is set to either inch/A or inch/AB to suit the expected country of
installation at time of shipment from the factory.
If the reader unit is set to the inch
configuration, all sheets placed on the copyboard will be identified as one of
inch-configured sheets (e.g., A4 will be identified as LTR). On the other hand,
if the reader unit is configured to A- or AB-metric, all sheets will be
identified as A- or AB-configured sheets.
b.Detecting
Operation
Operation of original detection is described below.
-BOOK mode
When original is 1 sheet (A4-R), and the copyboard cover
(platen cover/ADF) is closed.
1) Standby
∙Original Sensor: OFF
2) When the copyboard cover is opened (the opening angle is more than 25
degrees)
∙Original sensor:
OFF
3) When the copyboard cover is closed (the
opening angle is 25 degrees)
∙Original sensor:
ON and the original size judgment process
(1)
4) When the copyboard cover is closed (the
opening angle is more than 5 degrees and less than 25 degrees)
∙Original Sensor: ON and the original size judgment process
(2)
5) When the copyboard cover is closed (the opening angle is 5 degrees or
less)
∙Original size is confirmed.
∙Original sensor: OFF
Original size is determined by comparing judgment
data between the original judgment process (1) and (2) then detecting
the changes.
The sensor output level may not be changed in the
following cases, leading to a fault in original size detection.
∙Solid black original in A3
size
∙Book-type original (The copyboard cover fails to be closed properly
due to thickness of original, becoming hard to detect sensor level
changes.)
∙When the copyboard cover is not closed properly. (The sensor level
changes are not detected after the above timeout has been
passed.)
