Jam Detection
○Purpose:
Learning the positions and conditions of jam
detection
1. Outline
This machine detects jams with six sensors (10 sensors when 3-Way
Unit-A1 is attached).
The jam types are, delay
jam, retention jam, and power-on jam.
The table below lists the sensors
with their target jams. Then the sensor locations are shown next.

*The green characters
indicate the sensors of 3-Way Unit-A1 (standard for the iR2270/2870-120V,
iR3570/4570 model).

The configuration of this
block is explained with controls and functions below.
2. Jam Details
a. Delay jam detection
1) Cassette paper feed section (Cassette 1,
2)
If the front end of printing paper does not reach
the retry sensor within the prescribed time after the paper feed motor becomes
ON, it is regarded as a cassette paper feed delay jam.
2) Other than the cassette paper feed
section
If the front end of printing paper does not reach the delay sensor
within the prescribed time after passing one sensor before (N-1), an
paper feed motor becomes ON, it is regarded as an N delay
jam.
b. Retention jam detection
If the rear end of printing paper does not reach the delay jam sensor
(N) within the prescribed time after the front end passes the retention jam
sensor (N), it is regarded as an N retention jam.
c. Power-on jam detection
This machine checks the amount of paper in the
machine when the power is turned on or a door is opened and
closed.
If the motors start with non-fused paper in the
machine when the power is turned on or a door is opened and closed, the
non-fused toner may smear the fusing film. When the power is turned on or a door
is opened and closed, the machine is checked for remaining paper. If remaining
paper is found, the main unit stops driving.
The jam detection sequence is as
follows:
3. Action
If a delay or retention jam occurs, this machine stops driving at the
upstream of the sensor but not at the downstream to eject the jammed paper
before stop. (Immediate stop in case of a power-on jam)
If a delay jam is detected at the fused paper ejection sensor (PS13),
this machine stops the fusing motor immediately to prevent the fused paper from
being wound.
In case of a jam, the DC controller notifies the main controller of
the jam page. When printing is restarted after jam recovery, the jam page is
printed first.
