1. Outline
a.
Function
The waste toner box serves to collect waste toner removed from the
photosensitive drum in the course of drum cleaning.
b.
Configuration
The waste toner box is a semi-transparent plastic container with an
approximate capacity of 2043 cc.
The waste toner removed from the photosensitive drum
by the work of the cleaning blade (found inside the drum unit) is carried to the
waste toner box (located in the front of the machine) by the waste toner
feedscrew rotated by the drive from the drum flange. The state (full) of the
waste toner box is monitored by the waste toner box full sensor. When full, the
box can accommodate abut 1766 cc of toner, which is about 1050 g in terms of
weight.
The following diagram shows the waste toner
bottle and the parts around it:

2.
Detecting the State (full) of the Waste Toner
Box
a. Outline
To prevent overflowing and an excess load on the waste toner
feedscrew, the machine checks the state (full) of the waste toner
box.
b. Timing of Detection
The machine checks on the state of the waste toner box at all
times.
c.
Method of Detection
The machine uses the following 2 stages to check the state of the
waste toner box:
1)
check on the state of the waste toner box full sensor
(PS16)
2)
check on the count by the DC controller
1)
Checking the State of the Waste Toner Full Sensor (PS16; see diagram
below)
The machine tries to find out if the waste toner box is nearly full
(1766 cc) with reference to the weight of the box.
The waste toner box [1] is found on top of the toner box tray [2],
which is held up from below at all times. The tray is fitted with a flag (waste
toner full detecting flag [4]); and, when the tray lowers under the weight of
waste toner, the detecting flag will block the waste toner box full sensor
(PS16), causing the DC controller to assume that the waste toner box is nearly
full.
2)
Checking on the Count by the DC Controller
The DC controller checks to see if the waste toner case has become
full (with 1766 cc of toner).
When the waste toner box has been identified as being nearly full as
the result of the sequence of operation in 1) above, the DC controller starts to
count the number of prints made; then, when the count reaches a specific number,
the DC controller will assume any of the following conditions:
∙
if the waste toner box full sensor remains on (blocking the flag) for
2000 prints continuously,
the machine will assume that the waste toner box
will soon be full (with nearly 1766 cc of toner).
-> the machine will issue a ‘waste toner full warning.”
-> the machine will issue a ‘waste toner full warning.”
∙
if the waste toner box is identified as being full for 100 prints after a
waste toner full warning has been issued,
the machine will assume that the waste toner box has become full
(with 1766 cc of toner).
->
the machine will issue a “waste toner full error.”
On the other hand, if the waste toner box full sensor does not detect
the flag at all while the count is kept, the count will be
reset.
d.
Machine Response
When the waste toner box is identified as being full, the machine
operates as follows:
∙
issues a waste toner box full warning, for which it indicates the message
“Waste Toner Box Full” on the display and disables printing
operation.
∙
issues a waste toner box full error, for which it indicates ‘E190-0000’
on the display and disables printing operation.
